What's the best way to clean a bit, should I get those bit wipes, or ? This is for a school horse so putting the bit in the dishwasher or sink isn't an option for me -

Just good ol' fashion water and a clean scrubber. NO SOAP. You can't guarantee you'll rinse it all off, and that's just nasty. I've never heard of putting a bit into the dishwater. I'd be very leary of that. And, if your bit is sweet iron, it's supposed to rust, so you don't have to scrub that off. Horses like the taste of rust.

But, kind of like just using water to rinse off your silverware you know? There's gotta be plenty of bacteria lounging around on the bits - from treats, grass, just being in their mouth for an hour or so. He uses a broken snaffle so there's nooks & crannies -

Bacteria's really not the problem--I mean, you've seen your horse eating manure, right? It's getting off all the rough particulate matter that accumulates and can start to irritate their mouth and taste nasty. The concern with soap is that, if you fail to rinse off every little last bit, it will taste nasty in their mouths. And, again, some bits have special metals or materials, or little joints and nooks and crannies, which makes thorough rinsing difficult.

Scotchguard sponges are useful for this. Then wash with water.

hmmm, I went with listerine soaked cloths - just gets the crud off other people seem to forget about when they use his bridle!

Ugh, I hate when lesson riders don't clean their bit. My college had a strict "must clean bridle, bit, and girth after every ride" policy. It's super-simple to do if everyone does the same thing. Just dunk the bit in the water bucket once you take it off.
