Pretty cool but that constant tail swishing indicates pain.
Which as we all know, is NOT cool.

Not necessarily pain. Also irritation, annoyance, etc. It's possible he's really hating the crowd, arena, etc.

There are dozens of reasons a horse will swish their tail Pain irritation, annoyance, hating the crowd, arena, also for balance or boredom and O MY GOD maybe bugs or other irritations not caused by the rider. If the horse was that put out at what the rider was doing the performance would not have been so good.

If your horse NEVER swishes it’s tail more power to you. So Poo poo all you want, I think they did a very good job

I was pretty impressed the horse continued to do the routine
even when it was "irritated" ...without a bridle on....

The horses I have seen who are more "irritated", usually are
crow hopping, bucking, going sideways, rearing, etc....

Malicious, I would like to see some video of you and your horse doing any type of pattern with or without bridle. It is very easy to be ‘superior’ while sitting in a chair.

how could any of us possibly know if the horse is irritated or not, without being there & knowing the horse?
I have observed some horses are polite in their communication~a flick of the ear, a soft snort, a tail flick.
other horses are not so nice~bucking, rearing, biting, running you down, stepping on your foot.
I was taught a horse should be calm, relaxed & willing no matter what stage of training. even just leading. that is always my goal, anyway~

A minor irritation or annoyance I can go with, pain no. The rider may have been slightly out of position or touched a ticklish spot. Maybe the spins or backing aren’t her favorite maneuvers, ever it was I doubt it was pain.

Roxy is a mare, right? Many mares wring their tales almost constantly, especially during parts of their cycle. It almost looks like she does it when ever she was being cued...which I've seen in a lot of very happily cooperative mares who seem to say "yup, I'll do that, but just remember I could take over any minute now."

At the opposite end, the horse was constantly licking, which tends to show contentment and cooperation.

So, no, I seriously see no pain, not even real annoyance there at all.

An amazing thing to watch, thank you for sharing it!

I would guess that horse had a bit of a sore back..... Watch her at her seat cues, and when she takes a deep seat for the run. I'd also venture to guess they practiced a bit that week which could account for a bit of soreness.

OK people I say why not take it for what it is and stop ripping at it, the bottom line in my opinion is Stacy put in a lot of time with a very nice horse and achieved a level of communication with her horse we all would like to have. She took the time to do it few of us have or will take the time to do so. If the horse was in pain or really disliked what was happening she would not have the first person ever to win the freestyle event without tack at the Tulsa Reining Classic in 2006.

I could give a shit about the rider.

I speak for the horse, Dear.
(And, when I say 'Dear', I really mean c*nt.)

                          :D

I haven't been around much...busy running my business. I really hate to delete posts, as I am all for free speech...but using the c word even with the * is really uncalled for when talking about another member of this tribe. We all have differing views about horses, horsemanship, what horses mean to use etc.

When you really look at it in the grand scheme of things, riding horses is unnatural to the horse...bottom line is they feel like they are being preyed upon. Trust is the only reason they allow us on their backs.

I could delete her post, but would rather ask her to edit it first. if anyone would like to take over the job as moderator I would be happy to hand over the reins...I am much to busy as of late to keep up with posts. Please PM me if you are interested!

Like lip flapping, I think sometimes they wring their tails because they're thinking. Does anyone remember the dancing horse video, with that great dressage mare, I think I remember she was a bit of a tail wringer too, especially during the more difficult bits. I boarded with a lady once that had a western pleasure horse that was horrible about it, and they checked that mare everywhere, vets, saddle fitters, farriers. They couldn't find anything wrong. So if a horse isn't showing other signs of irritation, especially if they're complying as well as this mare, I wouldn't necessarily jump quickly to the irritation, pain, etc conclusion.

I sort of suspect if they are swishing their tail...sort of angrily back and forth...to me it tells me they might be thinking...heah this is hard work to do ...I really may not want to do this, but you are asking me to do it....I will comply...but I am sort of pissed off....

My friend's Thoroughbred does lip flapping when we are getting ready to do a trail ride...he has got his saddle on...just before the bridle goes on...he really flaps/smacks his lips...I think he is getting excited....like telling us ..he is ready and getting impatient that we are so slow !!

I think it is interesting to watch what they do and also when they do it...

Have you watched tail swishing in Piaffe (spelling ?) I sometimes call this move "Pissed Off" ....

I've seen this clip before and done all my gushing, or I would have gushed even more here. The level of communication between them is amazing.

Don’t worry Amy I don’t let foul mouthed children upset me, as far as I’m concerned people who have to resort to profanity and name calling are lacking in other aspects of their lives.

I haven’t posted here much but I have enjoyed reading everyone’s views (well most everyone) for quite a while, Take care

I think it was so sweet of the horse to do things that
Ellen asked it to do .
I really appreciate a horse who even though my cues
may be confusing or I am doing things that may hurt or irritate them, they
still TRY to figure out what I would like it to do.
Sometimes they really try hard to please us...
Sometimes they let us know they don't want to do stuff too.
I really value this "communication" aspect in riding.
